Knowing what your cats and dogs are able to eat is extremely important to keeping them healthy and with us for a very long time. They are a part of our families and we want to keep them as safe and happy as we possibly can. It can also depend on the size or breed of your dog as to what they can eat and what they can’t. Some smaller dogs may have health problems that larger dogs simply do not have. It is crucial to keep up with their specific health needs and what they are permitted to eat. Small dogs typically have the most health issues to keep in mind when choosing foods for your pets.
As humans, there are certain things that we have allergies or intolerances to and simply cannot eat. Foods with gluten, dairy, and wheat, and many other types of foods, can significantly impact how we feel on a daily basis. So just like us, dogs have similar allergies and intolerances. Sometimes we can eat cheese and sometimes we can’t, it all depends on the person. You are probably wondering can dogs eat cheese. Dogs are just like humans in the respect that it simply depends on the dog. Some dogs have a lactose intolerance while other dogs do not. Lactose can make a dog vomit, have diarrhea, and other severe stomach issues. If they have a lactose intolerance they simply cannot digest dairy products which means they most definitely cannot eat cheese. A dog owner will not know if their dog is lactose intolerant unless they have given the dog dairy previously and have noticed a difference in their pet. You may want to start out with a small amount of dairy to see how it impacts your dog.
Some of the smallest dog breeds tend to have more health issues than bigger dogs. However, most of the problems a small dog would have are conditions such as patellar luxation which basically a dislocation in the dog’s knee joint which may cause them to limp. Some small dogs have a homeostasis imbalance which makes them lose heat faster than bigger dogs which means they cannot be in cold weather for very long periods of time. Smaller dogs have a better chance in becoming intolerant to certain foods. So make sure you keep an eye on what your small dog eats to make sure they are not intolerant to any foods.
Taking care of your dogs is the best thing you can do for them. Sometimes you will not know about their intolerance until after they have had a significant amount of the food. Keep an eye on your pet and make sure they do not have any tummy troubles.
